We signed Miss Doodle up for Ice Skating Lessons on Saturday mornings through May. She is just beginning and isn't super steady on the ice yet. Fortunately there is one other girl in the class who is brand new to the world of ice skating as well. Their instructor gives them both special attention. Meanwhile the other instructor teaches the rest of the, obviously very comfortable on the ice, kids in the class.
I had only taken Miss Doodle ice skating one time before this class. I'm not very skilled and have no knowledge of how to teach someone else to ice skate. Here's where not being a native Minnesotan becomes glaringly obvious. I learned to skate a little when I moved here at the age of twelve, and it wasn't too bad considering I'd had many years of rollerskating under my belt, but I'm definitely not a pro either. And I tell the Regime that although he was born and raised in Minnesota, he's not like a lot of the other Minnesotans. In many ways I think he acts more like a New Yorker, due to his dad's influence.
So I am sure that these lessons are money well spent. I think that at least one of us should learn skills that will help us to endure these long, cold Minnesota winters.*
*We've got a lot of the indoor playing skills down. Like lego building, reading, watching tv, and art. But none of us know how to ski (I went once and it was a horrible, terrible, awful experience), I went snowshoeing once (just this past February and it was a great experience, which I hope to repeat with the kids sometime), and The Regime has never gone ice skating. The little Bug already wants to learn how to ice skate. We'll be sure to sign her up once she's old enough. And by the way, for those of you reading from outside the state, it still feels and looks like winter out here.
